Perhaps the most special element is the section dealing with the Italian masters. This is excellent and highly informed, with details on the tragic and dissolute life of Caravaggio, the shady circumstances surrounding Raphael's death, and the nature of Leonardo's achievements, all placing some of the most famous works by these artists in their proper context--a good zoom feature which allows you to study the works after reading about the artist. Art and architecture are extremely well-covered, as there are also fine guides to four of Italy's most famous cities--Rome, Florence, Venice and Siena--and to some of the more opulent historical buildings around the country.
Certainly, the combination of these historical and cultural insights makes this CD-ROM well worth getting before visiting Italy. It places the art and culture in context and really helps in understanding why this elongated peninsula, reaching down from the belly of Europe into the Mediterranean, is so special. --Toby Green
